This self performance is a major theme in Jhas’ work, reflected in the subtitle for I’ll Start Again Tomorrow that reads: And Other Lies I’ve Told Myself. The author finds power in her own story – to help those stuck on the hamster wheel of their own goals, particularly in fitness.
“I was convincing myself that it was okay to hate my body,” she recalls, “that it was okay to resort to the extreme measures, such as the on again, off again yoyo cycle of dieting. All in the name of perfection.”
Jhas’ performance even extended into her career, where she had gone through the motions of corporate hustle to become the thing that her family and peers thought she should be. The relentless grind brought money, the downtown penthouse, a good marriage, and checked all the boxes she had worked hard to achieve. She had become the youngest South Asian female to land a senior executive position at IBM Canada, yet the end destination didn’t bring the joy she was expecting.
She had traded her true desires for external objectives and accolades. Her journey towards fulfillment could only begin when she realized that true happiness is cultivated through inner work.
“I wanted to get to a place where I was working with my body, not against it,” she recalls. “I wanted to be able to wake up in the morning, look in the mirror, and not pick myself apart as little projects to solve or correct.”
Putting in the internal work helped Jhas discover her calling – which was to help others get off the same hamster wheel she was stuck on for so many years.
This healing is an iterative process – Jhas has come a long way in uncovering her inner sense of fulfillment and cultivating happiness but there is always more room for growth
